  • About Me

Hi, I'm Yakira! I have eleven years of experience in music, being classically trained in piano and violin since around six years old and having done many AMEB exams for both instruments since. I've played in my church band for around five years, and more recently, after completing my Diploma of Music, I've also been playing and learning about lots of other genres; including jazz, blues, rock, Latin, funk and more.

I've always had a keen interest in music theory, which has grown from learning about Italian classical terms and elaborate melodies to crazy jazz chords and complex harmonies. I also enjoy writing and recording music as well when I have time!

I've been teaching for over four years now, and there are things to learn in every aspect of music that can be carried over into the others. I try and incorporate the most useful, rewarding and fun things from every side I've learnt over the years into lessons; whether it's reading chords and sheet music, providing a solid groundwork in classical technique, or learning how to learn songs by ear and improvise.

Everyone has different tastes, interests and ideas of what they want to get out of music, and the most important thing for me as a teacher is to accomodate for that in the most effective way for each person, whilst building a solid and well-rounded foundation to equip them for whatever they wish to do with music - and making it stress-free and fun in the process!

    What students and parents think:

"Yakira is a fantastic teacher that I would recommend to anyone of any age and skill level. She's very calm and understanding of the difficulty in learning an instrument. If I didn't understand something, Yakira would find a way to explain it without being patronising or making me feel silly. Yakira is incredibly knowledgeable and great fun to be around, which makes learning an absolute joy. "

    - Samuel Fairlamb,

    student, 36

"I am really enjoying the piano lessons I get, and I have a lot of fun! I LOVE them, and Yakira is really nice and sweet."

    - Zoe Consalvo,

    student, 10

"My son loves to make up songs on the piano, but I wanted him to learn some music theory too. Yakira is a wonderful teacher, and very patient and understanding with my autistic son. I love that she allows him to pick the music that he's interested in, while still teaching him theory, chords, etc. Highly recommend!"

    - Skye Fairney,

    parent

"My younger sister and I have been with Yakira for over a year now and we still get excited when our next lesson comes around. She incorporates a lot of variety into our lessons and challenges us, but always makes sure that we understand the concepts before moving on to something different. She is very nice and kind and most importantly, we come away from her lessons not only feeling happy, but feeling we have something to work towards for our next lesson."

    - Rory & Alice Martin,

    students, 13 & 11

"Yakira is a really positive, friendly teacher. She always knows what I need to work on, but she still lets me decide what type of thing I want to learn. She is also very musically talented and knowledgeable."

    - Daniel Fairney,

    student, 13

"I have had one term's experience with Yakira so far for my girls, and she is great with them. They are playing a few tunes already and really enjoying the lessons with her - she is so friendly and makes it fun. My girls look forward to their lessons when we have them. I highly recommend Yakira, she is a great teacher: flexible, accommodating and professional in a fun, easy manner."

    - Amanda Singh,

    parent

"It’s been about 40 years since I first learnt piano, so it’s been a big learning curve for me and I am so grateful to Yakira for tailoring my lessons to suit me. I have been
learning with Yakira for 2 terms and already I am playing songs that I love. She is a great teacher for adult
    beginners.

I appreciate her knowledge of music theory, which has helped me understand my playing. She has a vast experience, and her enthusiasm and love of music shines through in her teaching and makes learning enjoyable. I highly recommend Yakira as a piano teacher. Thank
    you, Yakira."
